A Night Divided by Jennifer Nielsen Submitted by Zoriana D.
Plot: A Night Divided is based off a historical event in 1961 when the Berlin Wall went up separating East and West Germany. A young German girl named Gerta lived on the Eastern side of the wall, it which is treated very poorly by the Soviets. Gerta, her mom, and her brother are separated from her dad and her other brother. Her family is separated for years. Gerta knew the danger of trying to escape East Germany, she also knew that West Germany was treated better and the rest of her family was there. She had to find a way to get over to West Germany. It was a very dangerous task. Getting caught could lead to death!
Why Read?: I personally don't like historical books, but this book explains to what it was like being separated by your family and living on the "bad" side of Germany during the night the Berlin Wall went up. This shows you how kids our age can overcome many challenges and can do anything they put their mind to. This book made me like a different genre of books that I thought I'd never like.
Comments: This book showed me that I can do ANYTHING I put my mind to. Nothing is too big for me to accomplish.

This book talks about her life with school, a job, friends, and a boyfriend and how she manages her bond with family.

This goes from her experiences in high school to her relationships with her best friends. It also talks about her boyfriend who doesn't treat her how she deserves to be treated.

When Clay Jensen comes home to find a package of tapes on his front step from an old classmate, Hannah Baker who committed suicide just recently, he finds out that the thirteen tapes are a list of the thirteen reasons why she killed herself- "and if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why". It made me cry and feel for the characters, and words just can't describe how amazing it was. I've read it so many times and I never get tired of it. I think it's something that a lot of people would enjoy reading because it's just so incredible.

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult Submitted by Courtney C.
Plot: In nineteen minutes, you can get revenge, and that's exactly what Peter Houghton did when he brought a gun to his school and started shooting. The ten killed, weren't the only ones who suffered the incident- Peter's parents and his lawyer defending him, face a similar kind of tormenting Peter faced his entire life in school. Judge Alex Cormier, whose daughter witnessed the tragedy, must decide whether or not to step down from the case; and Josie Cormier must deal with her own skeletons in her closet when she claims she can't remember what happened... or can she? Nineteen Minutes is a brilliantly told tale that asks the question: how well do we really know someone?
Why Read? : Nineteen Minutes is a book that I personally could not put down. It has twists and turns that nobody expected, but it's also one of those books that really make you think about what bullying really does to a person. Everyone claims they know how bad bullying is but do they really know that when they relentlessly pick on somebody, they could be putting a life on the line? Nineteen Minutes remind us of that tragic fact and it reminds us that everything has a consequence. It also lets you, the reader, know that there is somebody out there who loves the killer, which is something people tend to overlook. When you read this book, you can't help but to think about what you would do if you were in this situation- what would you do if someone came to your school with a gun, what would you do if you saw someone you loved get shot right before your eyes, or what would you do if your child was responsible for the deaths that happened because of a school shooting? Nineteen Minutes evoked some pretty strong emotions in me when I read it- anger, frustration, sympathy, sadness- and I can almost guarantee that anybody who reads it will feel the same way.
Comments: This is probably one of Jodi Picoult's best books, and if anyone were to decide to read it, they wouldn't regret it.

Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky Submitted by Erin A.
Plot: Charlie is a high school freshman who is used to sitting on the sidelines in life and watching everybody else until he meets a group of seniors and his English teacher that will change his life forever. The book is a series of letters written to an anonymous person about his new experiences in life and how he is changing as a person.
Why Read: This book is worth reading because it was one of the funniest books I have read in a while. The book can also relate to anybody because his experiences are so real.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky Submitted by Jessica Y.
Plot: The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming of age story that revolves around the protagonist Charlie. It is told in style that consists of letters. It begins with him starting high school and not knowing anybody. He befriends a pair of siblings named Patrick and Sam who introduce him to their friends. He has a lot new experiences as the school year continues & pretty much learns that he has to live for himself and not for others. The story touches on sensitive topics such as homosexuality, drugs, suicide, abuse, rebellion, and relationships.
Why Read?: It's worth reading because it's very true. Not the story itself, but some of the things that the characters go through. It makes you think and sheds light on some topics that most people don't really think about, but that drastically affect people's lives. It's an incredibly good book.
Comments: It's been adapted into a movie starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller.

Hate List by Jennifer Brown Submitted by Danielle S.
Plot: Many things can happen for a reason. It can affect on how you look at things. Iin the book Hate List, it talks about a normal teenage girl named Valeri, who struggles with everyday life. She's going through family problems and even school problems. She met this boy who really caught her attention. They started dating and everything has changed for her. Her whole entire personality changed and it really changed her life forever. She's been bullied everyday of her life. There was no way of ever stopping the situation. Towards the end of the book she realizes that things can happen for a reason and she can never change the way things were.
Why Read? : This book is worth reading because it teaches young adults like myself that
bullying someone can be very hard. Bullying can change that persons life forever. It only takes a day for someone to be bullied.
Comments: Reading this book has changed my life in so many ways. This book taught me that there are people like me that are getting bullied everyday and there's no one out there trying to stop. If you just take a second and start opening your eyes you will see that there can be someone being bullied. You just have to take the chance and reach out to someone and stop this madness. And in this book that's what Valeri had not learned. She thought that she was bullied and people didn’t care. So she took this the hard way instead of asking for help and telling her parents, or the school that she was being bullied. If you get the chance I would really recommend you to read this book because it would teach you a lot on how people are being bullied in everyday life.
